A large scale second story rooftop garden design in Toorak required an altogether different approach. The brief was to design a rooftop garden with minimal plants, minimal upkeep and minimal weight. Whatever we put on the roof had to be oversized to fit with the scale of the space; large format tiles and giant ceramic pots were chosen. The greenery mostly came from artificial turf laid on interlocking drainage cells.
The paving was bought up to match the level of the grass and we designed a balustrade to raise the level of the walls without blocking any of the surrounding view. Modular Box Hedge benches were made up to border the skylight and designed to be light enough to be moved to wherever they were needed. This rooftop garden design is, essentially, a folly and was a lot of fun.
